The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank

Is Anne's anxiety a fuel for her writing?

One of the things that stands out about Anne's diary is its constant referral to her
depression and her problems with feeling blue. Being confined in the small space for over
two years, Anne and the rest of the occupants seem to come up with their own ways of
handling the pressures.

1. How does Anne cope with her depression?
2. How do others in the Annexe deal with the stress and anxiety?

Anne's diary gives her the opportunity to express her feelings, to communicate her depression and anxiety. Anne copes by externalizing these feelings in her writing, rather than directly confronting the others in the annex (for the most part).

Anne's mother plays peacemaker, and her father is strong and constant. Mrs. Van Daan is spoiled and demanding, she makes life miserable, all while her husband sulks in the background.
