I think the fact that Anne sometimes gets depressed shows us several things about her. First, she is becoming a teen - her "angst" is something a part of normal development. Secondly, we see the difficulty of her situation. She is finding everything about her world turned upside down. All if all, things are just a mess and it is hard to be upbeat.
