Living in the Annex begins to take its toll on Anne. She becomes depressed, tries to hide her depression and act as if nothing is happening, and works hard to make everyone else happy and comfortable. The conflicts with her mother do become a bit more severe, and she turns to her father for comfort. She is also in love for the first time.
