How did the rules of the secret annexe prove to be essential for the 8 people living there?

Rules are needed and their uses are required

The rules in the annex were designed to keep all the people as quiet and discrete as possible. They all had to avoid doing anything that could make their presence known to the outside world.

Some rules included:

While workmen in the building (8:00am to 6:00pm) no noise.

No running water

No toilet flushing

No trash thrown out, all will be burned.
