The people who sold them illegal food coupons were caught, so there are no stores of food in the house. The adults are on edge about food and politics. At one point it is discovered that Mr. Dussel has been hoarding food in his cupboard. Anne can't believe this. Everybody is hungry and rations are scarce and meager.
