As a Jew herself, Anne experienced the bigotry and prejudice that all Jews experienced while the Nazis took power. She was a strong believer that people could be good, and she, therefore, could not tolerate any kind of torture. As she became more and more aware of the horrible things that were happening outside the Secret Annex, she became more horrified that people could act in such vicious ways. While Anne believed in the essential goodness of mankind, she was truly horrified by the things that were happening.
