Watching Adam work everyday, she can see he's deteriorating. Rather than watch him die, she wishes to die first. 40 years later her wish is granted. At her graveside Adam proclaims Eve carried the Eden around with her presence. This speaks to the theme of love. Love is hard even if you’re the only two living people. Twain’s piece suggests that love comes with time by doing compromises and not trying to change the other. Love is full of disappointments and one feels lonely from time to time, but the point is to never give up on one’s soulmate and fight for love with passion, because this feeling is what makes life exciting and beautiful.
