The Devil's Arithmetic

Why would Aunt Eva say " Let the children play. They are children for such a short time."? What about her history might inspire that remark?

Aunt Eva spent her youth in the concentration camps..... children weren't able to be children. They lived in fear, they labored, and they tried to stay alive.... it was all about survival.
