Why were the girls surprised when Hannah told them she went to school?

Hannah tells them of her life in New Rochelle. They are amazed to hear that she can go to school and even goes shopping on the Sabbath. They are amazed that she has non-Jewish friends in school. Jews, at the time, were not allowed to go to school.
