Why does Hannah refuse to do the readings at the dinner table?

Hannah is a typical teen tired of the endless rituals and traditions demanded by her faith. Reading from scripture was something that she did not enjoy or feel a duty to do. This, of course, sets us up for her transcendental trip into the past.
