The Devil's Arithmetic

What is their first definite clue that Nazis have been lying?

Was it while they were in the boxcars or when they saw their realities belongings on the ground

Upon arriving at the train station the villagers begin to suspect that what Hannah told them might be correct. Fayge notices her grandmother's discarded satchel among the other personal items littered about the ground. The prisoners have been sent forth without their things, because they won't need them where they are going.I also feel that the reaction of the children and Gitl's songs in the truck allude to the fact that something is wrong at the conclusion of Chapter Nine.
