The Torah, the foundational narrative of the Jewish people, describes Passover as a guarded night, or a night of vigil. It is on this night that God is believed to have protected the Jewish people from the plague that took the first-born son from Egyptian families. Opening the door is a symbolic gesture to welcome the prophet Elijah and to display faith in God's protection.
