Grandpa Dan lived through the Holocaust. He lost parts of his family, many friends, and experienced the Nazi atrocities first-hand. These things affected them for life.... how could they not? Thus, his family ignored or excused his behavior based upon these things. His outbursts were understandable.... and excusable.
