Why does Tom at first refuse the offer from the devil?

Tom actually wanted to think about the first offer and consult with his wife. After their consultation, she took matters into her own hands and went to make a deal with Old Scratch herself. Unfortunately, Old Scratch eliminated her, and Tom joined up with him because he was rather happy his abusive wife met with her end....... it's almost like he owed Old Scratch at that point!
