The Devil and Tom Walker

What would most people’s reactions be to meeting this stranger? Why doesn’t Tom react like most people?

The text infers that Tom was not easily intimidated, and that he'd been married so long to a harsh-tempered, overbearing woman.... that the devil simply didn't frighten him.

Tom was a hard-minded fellow, not easily daunted, and he had lived so long with a termagant wife that he did not even fear the devil.
