The Devil and Tom Walker

What does the tree with Deacon Peabody’s name on it show about him? (How is it used as a symbol of his character?)

From the text:

On the bark of the tree was scored the name of Deacon Peabody, an eminent man who had waxed wealthy by driving shrewd bargains with the Indians.

From the text, we can infer the Deacon's godliness was only for public consumption. In his private life, he was a greedy man who cheated the Indians to line his own pocketbook.
