Chris's autism makes it difficult for him in social situations. The chatting neighbor is overwhelming to him. There is so much emotion involved that Chris has difficulty processing. Chris Mrs. Alexander tiring because she is "doing what is called chatting where people say things to each other which aren't questions and answers and aren't connected". Chris ends up leaving while Mrs. Alexander goes inside to get refreshments.
