Why is the scene when Danforth questions Elizabeth about Johns faithfulness so important to the plot of the play ? (What Elizabeth says && what significance it has.)

John Proctor has already loudly proclaimed that his wife NEVER lies, so when she is questioned about his adultery and denies his unfaithfulness everyone believes it is Proctor who has lied.
