Reverend Hale comes to the Proctor's home after Elizabeth was mentioned in court. He comes to test Proctor's devotion to scripture and the church. He asks why Proctor doesn't regularly attend church and if all his children are baptized. Hale is an outsider who knows little about the community. He actually comes across as sincere in his beliefs and not simply out to wield power and find witches at all costs.
