Why does John refuse to sign his confession?

John has tried so hard to redeem himself for his infidelity. His secret sin had been eating at his soul because he treasured his integrity. When he is asked to sign his bogus confession, he can not ruin his name any further, 

"How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!"
