why does dansforth,parris,and hale want john and the other prisoners to confess

There is really no way out for the prisoners. The court's very existence depends on prosecuting "witches". They offer salvation, through God, if they confess.Really this means they won't be killed. A confession makes the court look good and validates its existence.
