As Proctor is given the pen (feather pen?) to sign his name he screams that "All I have is my name!". I really love this scene. Proctor knows that if he signs the false confession, he is really giving away his soul. Proctor has discovered that truth is God and the rest is merely Puritan hypocrisy. He already lost part of himself over his adultery with Abigail; he cannot stand to lose more. Despite his marital indiscretions, Proctor is a very principled man. He realizes that moral compromise will destroy his soul and that his name is all he has left.
