what is a crucible and how is it used

There are three definitons of crucible that apply to the novel. The first, "crucible" is a great test or trial, therefore the title is an apt description of the novel's happenings. The second, is an earthen ware pot ot a container that can withstand great amounts of heat; this applies to Salem. The third definition is "a place where forces come together to bring about change; the forces that came together at the trial served to bring about great change. All three of these definitions work in context.
