In terms of the novel, a crucible would be a metaphor for a test or trial. The people of Salem are being tested; they are testing people to determine if they're witches, innocent people are being put on trial, and characters are also facing trials in their personal lives. In addition, the folks of Salem are being forced to test their own moral compasses, their beliefs, and their ideals.
