Tituba is no fool. She knows that telling the truth would only make matters worse for her. Her only chance is to accept what they accuse her of and repent. A black woman has no rights or credibility in a puritan village. Tituba wisely accepts blame and then manipulates the the accusers. When John Hale interrogates Tituba, she becomes frantic and starts to say the devil wants her, but she says no every time. Tituba then proceeds to blame people in the town for bad things. This deflects blame and suspicion on to others.
