Reverend Hale is initially shocked at the amount of witchcraft ramped in the village. He goes at his job with exuberance but as the story wears on, he becomes disillusioned. Petty grievances between neighbors turn into accusations of witchcraft. Accusations on John and Elizabeth Proctor in particular cause Hale to re-access the witch court. Hale begins to understand that it is in the courts interest to find witches to validate its very existence. By the end of the play Hale is completely disillusioned. He begs Proctor to confess a lie to satisfy a corrupt court.
