I think he realizes he is done in Salem. People have had it with the executions which he was a big part of. He really does't have a congregation left. Abigail has stolen his money and fled. On top of that he finds a knife stuck to his door.

Parris is completely defeated. Abigail has stolen his money, his credibility is gone, and he realizes that the trials have proven nothing and have in fact hurt the people of the village.
