When it is revealed that John has had an affair with Abigail, we come to understand Elizabeth's coldness toward him. She remains his wife, she takes care of hearth and home, but she carries a distinct lack of trust. For Proctor, he has lost his honor in his wife's eyes. Elizabeth, however, is prepared to forgive Proctor, even as he is unable to forgive himself. They are at a crossroads in their marriage, but in the end, their marriage prevails.
