In the end, Hale attempts to bring reason and logic to the court, He seeks fairness and common sense. It is important to remember that Hale's views were far different at the start of the play...... he has evolved as a character.

Parris, on the other hand, does not change over the course of the play. He is self-serving, thus, he works against the court. Parris encourages the girls' lies and questions everything that occurs within the courts. He plays on the hysteria..... the fear, in order to preserve himself..... his position.
