Proctor's only concern is his wife; he has no lingering feelings about Abigail other than immense and heart wrenching feelings of regret.

Abigail, on the other hand, truly believes that if she can remove Elizabeth from the picture, her way will be clear to have John Proctor for herself. He's the obsession of a selfish, loopy young woman..... and she's going to make him pay for spurning her. Sje doesn't want her reputation tarnished, so she plays the game....... but she does want the end result to be the "end" of Proctor's wife.
