Revenge played a large part in the accusations. For example, Elizabeth dismissed Abigail from her home; Mrs. Putnam believed that Goody Nurse had something to do with her infants' deaths; Putnam has been after land Giles Corey has refused him; and the girls are terrified that people will learn what they were really doing in the woods. There's a lot of revenge going on in the first Act.
