I think Elizabeth becomes more self-realized by the end of the story. In the beginning she is upset and even a little vindictive. Her husband has been cheating and naturally this flusters her. By the end of the book Elizabeth has made peace with John and herself. She accepts things as they are and loves her husband despite his frailties. She lies for him but is very uncomfortable doing so.
