Fear is a major motivator in the Crucible. John Proctor fears the court finding out the truth about his infidelities with Abigail. He also fears the court's retribution for standing up for his wife. Mary Warren pretty much fears everything. She fears Proctor's wrath if she does not tell the truth; she fears Abigail's vengeance if she does tell the truth; she fears the court's judgment whether she tells the truth or not.
