How are insiders and outsiders defined during these times? How do we know?

At the start of the play, the community is in a state of chaos and fear following Betty's illness and the actions of the other girls. These fears escalate quickly.

I believe that "insiders" would be used to describe those who were in good standing with the Puritan church. Oursiders would be defined as those who weren't.
