Reverend Hale is assessing the accused. His purpose in the Proctor home is to observe and question the couple in order to paint a clearer picture of their lives.... who they are. He questions the couple about their position in the Puritan community, their habits, church attendance, knowledge of the Bible, and importance of church rituals in their lives. The Puritan community expected complete dedication to the church and adherence to its rules. Any deviation from what was expected would have made the couple suspect in Hale's eyes.
