Certainly, Proctor is unwilling to sully his name, and in the end, Elizabeth too protects him. She loves her husband, and he has hidden his adultery from all but her. Elizabeth, however, loves her husband and will not be the one to reveal his secret. Elizabeth saw her marital vows as of vital importance.... John's breaking of those vows and inability to admit to his own actions is the reason for her imprisonment.
