How could this desire for vengeance cloud the credibility of the witchcraft claims that people made?

Who's vengeance are you referring to? The accustaions of witchcraft enabled many people to point fingers at those they'd felt had slighted or cheated them. Unfortunately, the mass hysteria didn't allow for second thoughts..... the accusations were completely lacking in credibility.
