Betty has a lot of things going on with her. In the play's opening we find her lying inert on her bed seemingly unconscious. Betty was affected by Abigail's meeting in the woods where they danced and set up a cauldron. All these activities are considered sinful and wicked in Salem. We can assume that perhaps Betty might be acting as she becomes responsive when Abigail threatens her.
