Thomas Putnam is characterized as a vindictive and greedy man who hides his motivations behind false piety. They blame Rebecca Nurse, a doula, for being responsible for the death of their babies during childbirth except for one. Anne cries that Rebecca Nurse has, “eleven children and [is] twenty-six times a grandma.”
