I can offer a few thoughts.

John has cheated on Elizabeth, and his lover is so in love with him that she wishes Elizabeth dead so that she can have John to herself.  Abigail was present in the woods that night, trying to conjure a spirit to get rid of Elizabeth.  She has already established herself as dishonest by having an affair; her dishonesty is what tears the community apart.

Why did John cheat?  Elizabeth had been quite ill and unable to perform wifely duties.  This is not an excuse for adultery, of course, but later Elizabeth blames herself for John's behavior.  John also realizes that he does love Elizabeth and he wants to regain her love and respect.  He decides to be completely honest about the affair in order to expose Abigail.  But then, Elizabeth, aware of the affair, lies to protect John from public humiliation.  Each does what s/he does because of love for the other.

The relationship is at stake, john"s confession or Elizabeth's lie to protect him cannot salvage it despite the love they now confess for each other. There is a crack at the initial, cannot be repaired.
