Franz d'Epinay's father is killed by Noitier. He is the counter-part to Albert de Morcerf; aloof, aristocratic, boring, and non-confrontal. Even after he found out that Noitier murdered his father he doesn't step up to the plate. It's no wonder that he didn't catch Valentine's attention.
