Fernand Mondego, on of Dantes closest friends, betrayed him because he was in love with Mercedes. After Dantes imprisonment, Fernand changed his name, married the girl (Mercedes), and gained military honors. When Dantes returns, he works toward and eventually exposes Fernand's military treason..... summarily taking away everything he'd taken from Dantes. Fernand commits suicide.
