1) The Count's interaction with the Inspector of Prisons, and his subsequent ability to gather important information (he also buys Morrel's debts).

2) An important part of the above information was the story of the Abbe's death.

3) the theme that people must suffer before attaining happiness/ it becomes evident that Dante's believes that even his friends/allies should not be free of suffering
