how is edmond dantes encouraging before chapter 10?

I'm not sure what you mean by encouraging. He takes control of the situation. M. Morrel finds that Dantès, a captain's mate when the ship left, has now assumed the captain's post because misfortune befell the ship and the aging war veteran, Captain Leclère, has died. Thus, it is now Dantès who commands the ship. His crew is fond of him and they follow his orders quickly and precisely.
