The Count of Monte Cristo

How does Monte Christo react to Villefort's thankfulness for saving his son?

This is the "idealogy chapter".

Does he think he's being sincere, is it satisfying or does he think it doesn't mean anything?

Monte Christo says that he is good at judging a man's character. Monte Cristo reveals that he has made a study of all men and knows that men are usually "ugly creatures" at heart.
