Edmond informs Fernand's family about what he is going to do. Mercedes begs Dentes not to harm her brother Albert and to only punish the guilty. Edmond agrees. As Fernand gets home he sees a note that explains his family has left him. Fernand, feeling he has lost everything, shoots himself. Dentes simply withdrew 5 million francs from Dangler's bank. Dangler no longer had the money he boasted about. His bank collapsed and Dangler was ruined.
