Why would Dumas choose a vampire or something supernatural to add characterization to The Count?

The count is frequently described as pale and mysterious who preys on certain people. He usually gets his revenge at night. I suppose this is vampire-like. When Dumas is re-born as the Count, he takes on a dark otherworldly persona. He is almost like the archetypal damaged superhero out for revenge and justice.
