Young Bevil Jr.
Son of Sir Bevil Jr. He is in love with an orphan named Indiana whom he brought back from France, but is engaged to marry another girl named Lucinda Sealand. He is terrified to ever disappoint his father.
Lucinda Sealand
Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sealand. She is engaged to Young Bevil Jr. but is in love with and wants to marry Mr. Myrtle. Young Bevil Jr. sends her a letter to tell her it is okay to break off the engagement since it is something they both do not want to happen.
Mr. Sealand
Lucinda's father and Isabella's brother. He wants his daughter to marry Young Bevil Jr. It is kept as a secret to everyone that he is the father of Indiana. Mr. Sealand does not recognize that he is her father until she drops her bracelet at a function and he realizes it is the bracelet he gave his first wife.
Mrs. Sealand
Wife of Mr. Sealand and mother to Lucinda. She really wants her daughter to marry Mr. Cimberton because he is well off and wealthy.
Sir John Bevil
Father of Young Bevil Jr. who is well liked, respected, and wealthy. He wants his son to marry Lucinda because he wants him to settle down and start having children as soon as possible.
Isabella
She mothers Indiana since she is an orphan. Indiana is actually Mr. Sealand's child, so Isabella is actually her aunt. Isabella is the sister of Mr. Sealand.
Mr. Myrtle
Young Bevil's friend who is in love with Lucinda, but her mother is trying to get her to marry Mr. Cimberton. Disguises himself as a lawyer to help prevent the signing of the marriage contract.
Mr. Cimberton
This is who Mrs. Sealand wants her daughter to marry. He agrees to do so because Lucinda is wealthy and will receive her father's fortune, not because he loves her. He looks at Lucinda "like a prized mare."
Tom
Young Bevil Jr's servant. Disguises himself as Sir Geoffery to try and delay the signing of the marriage contract.
Philis
Lucinda's maid. Suggests that Mr. Myrtle disguise himself as Sir Geoffery to be able to get close to Lucinda.
Sir Geoffrey
Cimberton's uncle. He has to give consent for Cimberton to marry.
