Uncle Julius

Uncle Julius does not want his nephew John to buy a plantation in "The Goophered Grapevine." He does all he can to distract John from his purpose, including relating this story. He's a captivating story-teller.

John

John is Julius' nephew. He's considering buying the old plantation, but he doesn't know that Uncle Julius has other plans. In such a rural culture, it's difficult to ascertain exactly way Julius objects. John is subject to his uncle's whims, however, out of social dictate, so if Julius wants to stall he has full right to do so.

Po Sandy

Sandy is a slave who was cursed after fooling around with cursed lumber. She's the subject of the story "Po Sandy."

Master Jeems

The guy is a fictional character of Uncle Julius' imagination. He describes a master who is so anxious about his slaves that he makes them work constantly so as to get his money's worth out of them. Tragically, he pushes his slaves too far. They haunt all of his dreams until he's in a living nightmare.

The Conjure Man

The Conjure Man is the protagonist of the story "The Conjurer's Revenge." The guy is so unimpressed by a potential client on the road one day that he turns the customer into a mule. He does not appreciate the insult of looking like a woman it seems.

Sis Becky

Sis Becky is a slave with whom Uncle Julius seems to have been acquainted. She has terrible fortune in life, yet chooses to do nothing to improve her situation. Finally one day her husband and child are sold away from her. Supposedly she could have prevented the situation if she had been more proactive, according to Uncle Julius.

Uncle Jube

Uncle Jube is a conjure man from "The Gray Wolf's Hat." After his son is accidentally killed by this couple, Jube loses his mind. He enacts swift vengeance upon the couple by turning them into a wolf and cat.

Chloe

She's a little white girl who has died in "Hot Foot Hannibal." She was responsible for the death of her lover, although she never intended it. In death she now has no peace and wanders around as a ghost. She cannot cross over into the afterlife because she figuratively has blood on her hands.
