James wrote this book in order to understand the issues that he and his siblings had collectively faced as the offspring of biracial parents and their place in society. He'd been raised in a black community of which he never felt completely a part of......... when the time came for him to confront these issues, he decided that in order to understand himself and who he was, he had to be able to understand his mother's history and background.
